Johnny’s Luncheonette: A Little Bit of Everything

Johnny’s Luncheonette is one of Newton’s most beloved eateries, and with good reason. Serving up American favorites, Johnny’s has a plate for just about any appetite. With a jukebox in the corner and a classic lunch counter, Johnny’s is the place to grab a thick slice of french toast or a generously portioned reuben and a side of sweet potato fries. Throw in a milkshake, and you’ll swear you’re in an episode of Happy Days.

Lee’s Burger Place: Nothing Beats a Classic

“Keep it Super Simple,” as the saying goes. And there is probably no simpler solution to a big appetite than an old fashioned burger with a side of fries. Keep it traditional with a bacon cheeseburger, or give it an Asian twist with their signature Teriyaki Burger. Get messy with some Chili Cheese Fries, or keep it light with a Kale Caesar Salad.

Tango Mango: Fast, Flavorful, Friendly

Newtonites have a choice when it comes to taquerias, but the friendly staff at Tango Mango offer up some unique flavors you won’t find anywhere else. Try the Blackened Chicken; tender, savory chicken with a peppery kick. Their Southwestern offers up spicy sausage in a blend of sauteed peppers and onions. Don’t forget a piece of the homemade cornbread.

Bill’s Pizzeria: Thin Crust You Can Trust

Slinging dough for over forty years, the family behind Bill’s Pizzeria certainly knows you can always improve on a staple. Think you’re a real “meat lover?” Take on “The Carnivore,” loaded with marinated chicken, steak, pepperoni, hamburger, sausage, and (of course) bacon. Thinking Greek? Try the “Grecian Formula” with spinach, feta, olives, and fresh tomato slices. They even have a pizza covered in nachos, for when the group can’t come to a consensus.

J.P. Licks: Sweet Treats and Local Loyalty

When a big, national ice cream chain opened up a location across the street, Newtonites showed up in force to support this local favorite (the “Cold War,” they called it). Well, the smiling cow still stands strong, offering up a rotating menu of chilly delights, including ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet. Perfect for the summer, but don’t stay away during the winter; J.P. Licks started brewing coffee in 1999 and offers some of the best hot chocolate in Newton. Bonus fact: it’s Kosher!
